A New Literary History of Modern China David Derwei Wang Books
While definitely not an "history" of modern Chinese literature, this book contains 200 or so short essays (about five pages each) by 150 or so experts on modern Chinese literature, covering a wide range of topics. It is stronger on early 20th century Chinese literature and relatively weak on more contemporary Chinese literature, i.e., the now almost seven decade long (!!) PRC period. If you have some knowledge of and interest in aspects of modern Chinese literature (and broader political trends), you will likely find some of these "humanistic" essays interesting and informative. However, you will also likely find the focus of many other essays diffuse and obscure. Many Chinese literary notables are mentioned in depth or fleetingly in more than one essay, making the search for integrating threads and a more complete picture among diverse essays extremely frustrating. This book would have been more useful with a bibliography that pointed readers to other, more in-depth scholarly studies of individual Chinese authors (in both English and Chinese).Tags : Amazon.com: A New Literary History of Modern China (9780674967915): David Der-wei Wang: Books,David Der-wei Wang,A New Literary History of Modern China,Belknap Press: An Imprint of Harvard University Press,0674967917,Asian - Chinese,China,Chinese literature - History and criticism,Chinese literature;History and criticism.,Literature and society - China - History,Literature and society;China;History.,LITERARY CRITICISM Asian Chinese,Literary Criticism,Literature: history & criticism
