Downed A Novel Gridiron Book 3 edition by Jen Frederick Literature Fiction eBooks
Downed by Jen Frederick is the book fans of the Gridiron series have been waiting for. JR "Ace" Anderson has been a prominent player in the first two books of the Gridiron series. He's one of those characters that readers either hate or love, depending upon the situation at hand. The one thing that stands out is no one really knows who Ace really is. He doesn't allow anyone close enough to see below the surface. His choices seem self serving at most times, but they are not for the assumed reasons readers are led to believe. Readers got to see a vulnerable side to Ace in Jockblocked and they also got to see his egotistical side in full mode.Ace Anderson was run out of his old school, Western U. It wasn't because of his performance as a quarterback on the field. He delivered two championships for the team. It was because the coach hated him with a passion for dating his daughter. It didn't matter that his daughter was a willing participant or that she was just as wild as Ace. Ace committed the worst sin a player could commit. The coach's vendetta not only hurt Ace's pride but also his potential for playing his senior year of college. Ace was being forced to give up his position as quarterback to a future freshman hotshot for another offensive position or sit the bench. This vendetta not only cost him the respect of his teammates but also added to the divide with his best friend Lucy Washington. The only choice he could make was transferring to Southern U for his senior year of college.
New beginnings aren't always what they are cracked up to be. He is having trouble bonding with his new team. On the field they are a solid unit but off the field he is the odd man out. They have heard the rumors of his past experiences. They are going to make him earn their respect. Ace is going to have to change his ways if he wants to become a true member of the team. Bryant Johnson knows a project when she sees one. Ace Anderson needs her help and he needs it fast if they are going to become a championship team.
Bryant Johnson is the coach's daughter. A big red flag for Ace Anderson. His past experiences have left him charred. Here at Southern U attitudes are quite different. His teammates and his coach are encouraging him to date Bryant.
Bryant is known for her dating projects. Her objective to make her boyfriends better men. She prepares them to be better boyfriends, better teammates, and better individuals. After she fixes her project she moves onto the next one. Ace Anderson is proving to be much more difficult than she thought. Her intentions for Ace are changing as she gets to know the man beneath the surface. He still needs a lot of work but he is a keeper.
Bryant is known for her generous heart and selfless giving. She takes care of others. Who takes care of her? Ace sees the vulnerable woman beneath the shiny surface. That's the woman that has his heart. This time he wants to win the girl's heart. He wants to take care of her and share his life.
Jen Frederick scored big with Downed. This book was a true game changer for Ace Anderson. Ace won more than his third college championship. He won my heart.

Downed A Novel Gridiron Book 3 edition by Jen Frederick Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Book 3 in the Gridiron series features JR “Ace” Anderson, former championship winning quarterback for the Warriors but now starting quarterback for the Renegades. He is trying to start over with a new team and a slightly better attitude. He is focused on keeping his head down, getting along with his new teammates when they acknowledge his existence, staying away from girls, and winning another championship. It was a good plan until Bryant Johnson decides that Ace needs her help…..
This book is not what I expected at all and it took a little while for me to understand Bryant and her motives. I was actually worried for Ace for most of the book because once you get to know him it's clear that while he made some mistakes, he is trying to be better & is not a complete a-hole.
What I really liked about this book is that while Bryant thought she needed to help Ace, she soon realized that he was actually helping her too. While Knox still holds the #1 spot for my favorite character in this series, Ace has just taken the #2 spot. I'm looking forward to getting back to some of my favorite Warriors (Hammer & Jack) but I'm also hoping that we are not done with the Renegades. After all, we need to know what is going to happen with Ty, Carter, Julio, & Zane.
The only real compliant I have about this book is the ending, I just wanted a little bit more or even a glimpse into the future, maybe to see if Ace gets drafted...
So let me just say that I absolutely hated Ace in Jockblocked. I was even considering not finishingvJockblocked, and not reading Downed because I disliked him so much.
I haven't had a reaction about a character I disliked so strongly in a long time.
But never the less, I picked up Downed because of all of the reviews, and the fact that Jen Frederick is such an awesome writer that I just had to give Ace a second chance.
And...
I winded up loving Ace, and this book in general. Bryant is what really did it for me.
I adored her. She was a sweet southern bell with a heart of gold. I loved how everyone adored her and she in return cared about everyone.
I just knew she was going to be perfect for Ace. Ace was a grade A jerk, but he redeemed himself.
I can not wait for the next book in this series. I am seriously on pins and needles.
I'm going to be super honest here. When I first started reading this novel I couldn't get a feel for Bryant. I mean her reasoning was sound, but I thought it was a somewhat convoluted idea. But then something just clicked for me. I got out of my own head and just sat back and watched the drama unfold. And Lord did Jen Frederick deliver. This book was OUTSTANDING. The chemistry was insane and the story was fabulous! I loved them together. I loved how Bryant was sooo sweet and sassy and how she could get Ace to do whatever she wanted with her sweet Southern ways, not even realizing he was playing right into her hands. It was epic. There were time I laughed out loud and felt like rubbing my hands gleefully because I wanted Bryant as my bestfriend. THAT'S how amazing she was.
And Ace. Boy oh boy..looook how far we've come. We all remember him from the previous book in the series and know that he definitely needed a wake up call. Enter Southern University. As the new and transfered QB, he has to deal with his less than stellar reputation of being a short tempered, angry jerk with a chip on his shoulder. But along came Bryant and her (innocent) machinations and what you have is a crass and blunt Northerner and a proper Sassy Southern lady making a connection neither of them saw coming.
I absolutely LOVED this book. It's a story about redemption, love and having a second chance at being the best person you can be. Bravo, Ms. Frederick!
5 stars! ~Ratula
