In book three the reader revisits familiar characters, but they become more developed as they become suspects in the murder of Sutton. All of these characters are only considered suspect by Emma; aside from Ethan, no other person knows Sutton is dead. Emma knows because she is the identical twin of Sutton and she has seen a snuff film in which Sutton was killed. Even Emma does not know that Sutton is a continuing ghostly presence. The ghost also wants to know why she was killed, but she cannot offer any material help to Emma, she has no memories of what happened on the night she died. She only has memory flashes when Emma has experiences, but the memories are fleeting and not definitive or long lasting enough.

Unlike books one and two, Ghost Sutton’s observations have become difficult to separate from Emma’s. For example, Emma might say “I went to visit my friend Charlotte…” The very next line, in a new paragraph, might be “I remembered the way Charlotte helped…” The second quote, however, might be from Ghost Sutton. A fast reader will find the need to go back and clarify who is saying what. I did not find this to be true in the first two books of the series.
The writing remains highly engaging, although I found no surprises in this book. All of Emma’s friend, and even sister Laurel are suspects at one time or other in the death of Sutton. And almost all of them are also eliminated as potential suspects. All factors leading to proof of guilt or innocence are only in the mind of Emma with a little help from discussions with Ethan, the only person who knows that he is talking with Emma. Which leads me to suspect Ethan, but there is no reason to suspect that in this book.

There are a few unresolved issues in this book, though. It seems that Dad Mercer, a doctor, has discovered a new, faint scar, on Emma’s/Sutton’s chin. Something to keep in mind during the read. Then there is the continuing mystery of Thayer. Where has he been? Why won’t he tell anyone where he has been? Why does Dr. Mercer hate Thayer so much?

This is book three in a series of six. There is continuing character development that sustains reader interest enough to buy the next book.

The Lying Game Sara Shepard Books Reviews

This is the 3rd installment in Sara Shepard's The Lying Game series, and it's decently interesting. NO SPOILERS here. It introduces a new face, someone who Emma thinks may have been involved in Sutton's death. Some items that were lost are found, and things Emma didn't even know she was looking for are found as well. This one is a bit slower than the first two, but it still has some evolution in Emma and Ethan's relationship, as well as in Emma's relationships with Sutton's friends. Emma figures out where some key players were on that ever important date, and finds new questions to ask about someone she had previously thought had a valid alibi. All in all, this is a good addition to the story and I cannot wait to see where this series ends! Who did it?!
I love Sara Shepard's books, and this one is really good. It's strange to read a book and not like many of the characters (Charlotte, Madeline, and Laurel) as people, yet, be intrigued by all of them. I love the mystery of this book and definitely plan to read the whole series.
This first book did a great job setting things up. I felt like I was able to grasp the main points of the story pretty quickly. That don't happen often. I really enjoyed the uniqueness of this story. I had a lot of elements i have never seen before. The tv show is really different from the book. So if you are worried about spoilers don't be. I enjoyed the tv show , but so far I think the books are so much better. If you are interested in a high stakes mystery you should give this book a try. I can't wait to start the next book.
This is the second series i read of shepherds i really like how its not predictable like alot of YA mysteries including her pll series. When i say predictable . Please folks dont get me wrong a pll die hard but i like how this series keeps me on my toes . I literally thought okay i know who the main murder suspect is! Nope i was so wrong . I'm on book 2 currently of this series due to that curve ball she threw . which made me want to instantly jump right into the next book soon as i finished book 1 . Praise for the lying game keep up the good work sara shepherd.
In this fourth book of the series, the Prologue is important. There are a lot of characters to keep up with. For those readers who do other things than read books for a living, this is a valuable tie in to the previous three books.

This book has a lot more action, and surprises, than book three. Sutton continues to bemoan her inability to give physical assistance to Emma when Sutton sees, or thinks, Emma is in danger. Emma likes to sneak around in her search for clues. While logical, she always gets caught rummaging through someone’s room. There was a close call at Dr. Mercer’s office, though.

Thayer remains an enigma. We still don’t quite know where he disappeared to. We find out that he and Sutton witnessed something in a canyon that involved Sutton’s (now Emma’s) adopted father, Dr. Mercer. Whatever happened quite possibly resulted in Sutton’s death.
Sutton’s friends and even family (Dad and Laurel) are all off again, on again, suspects. This carries on from book three, but serious consideration of dad is a new twist.

Emma makes some new and quite interesting discoveries in this book, but new doubts arise. The character of Mrs. Mercer has not been previously developed. With new revelations in this book, questions about Mrs. Mercer have to be answered.
Why doesn’t Emma just give up and run away? She has a few thousand dollars and some possessions hidden with a friend. Why not just disappear?
